The smart car is a small vehicle for two manufactured by Mercedes. As gas prices soared, Mercedes made a car that is gas efficient but are these cars safe? Their much smaller than an average automobile measuring just over 8 feet long, 5 feet wide and weighing 1828 pounds and is constructed with a “tridion steel safety shell”. The shell is made up of a steel housing and its intricate framework is designed to displace impact forces over a large area of the vehicle. This steel frame as well as the car’s short wheelbase displaces impact forces lessening the blows to its occupants. These smart cars use high-tech airbags which are placed throughout the car. This construction gives these tiny vehicles the best chance of being safe.

The Institute for Highway Safety gives the 205 smart cars for two its highest rating of “good” in 3 out of 4 categories. The small car received a “good” rating for moderate overlap front side and roof strength. It only received an “acceptable” for head restraints and seats. There is no information available for the front crash prevention.

Car Connection, an independent company that agrees that the construction of the smart car makes it as safe as a car this small car can be. Car Connection cautions that physics play a large role in evaluating the cars safety. Car Connection agrees that even though the build of the smart cars is great, if they get hit by a larger vehicle, which is every other vehicle on the road, these cars are going to take the brunt of the force. Car Connection seems skeptical on the overall safety of the vehicle.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the smart car for two a 3/5 rollover rating and gave the vehicle a 21.2% risk of rollover. This is in line without their expect views as the smart car for two while built well could be thrown into the air by larger cars such as an SUV or truck.

Overall, the consensus opinion seems to be that the smart car for two is as safe as a car this small car can be. However, that being said, physics tells us that when a smaller object is struck by a larger object, the small smart car doesn’t fair well while the smart car for two’s frame and airbag systems will limit the damage as much as possible. These cars are not as safe as a standard 4 door car. For example, a heavier car such as the Toyota Prius which gets better gas mileage, that the public wants is much safer than the Mercedes smart car for two.
